How we do it
The model for Gospel Communities is still very experimental at this point. Being a young church we are open to and welcoming of change. By no means do we claim to have gotten it right at this point, nor will we for quite some time. Currently, however, we try to group anywhere from 6-12 people together in one Gospel Community, though preferably there will be 8-10 in a group.
The big idea behind our model is this: one church cannot meet the needs of a city, but multiple house churches can. There is a benefit to both the large church and house church model. Our intention is to truly have our cake and eat it too in regards to these things for the betterment of our city. A large church has more resources of people, talents, energies, time and funds. The mobility and precise nature of ministry that comes along with house churches is key to effectively ministering to our communities. Thus, instead of choosing one model over the other, we do our best to maintain both. Gospel Communities then is essentially our attempt at house church planting.
This group of people will start off much like a dating relationship. First there will be a designated time and place to meet. The first time or two will be no doubt awkward and uneventful besides some hopeful ice breaking. After a few weeks of this and a decision to continue forward in the relationship, relational bonding, quality time and the likes all become more natural. After a few months, no longer is the date night the main part of the relationship, though still integral. Rather, the small parts of life that are shared make all the difference.
So too we desire for our Gospel Communities to start of with a more planned and structured meeting to start breaking ice and testing waters. Eventually, however, we want them to truly and authentically be living life together in the details of every day. The weekly meeting time will still be very key to the health of the group, but the breakfasts, hang out times, and everything in between will be what truly bonds people together allowing for accountability, growth and substantial ministry in every day life.
